Cobbles

cob-ble noun :cobblestone
cob-ble verb  :to make (something) by putting together different parts in a quick way

Little granite reminders that you are somewhere special, somewhere enchanting and intoxicating. A place saturated in history and frozen in time for the very moment you walk or ride through one of the city gates.

We had the good fortune of having bikes to ride and took the liberty of getting up early, before the swans and the city and the bells. With the freedom to fly over cobbles and see the great awakening, we left our map and rode down streets not because of where they led, but in the great hope of getting lost in the curious secrets of Bruges.

With beautiful, fleeting solitude, we cobbled our ride over ancient roadways and along once mighty shipping canals with the buttery warmth of the neighborhood bakery blanketing the air, swans gliding off to dine along the waterways, and bells pealing the new day. We lost hours in this enchanting fairyland before putting our bikes away. Over breakfast, we planned our time in the dream of Bruges and headed out into the newly awakened city joining other cyclists, horses, cars, dogs, and pedestrians. But we had the morning in our pockets to remember the solitary freedom of flying over cobbles without direction.
